Product Description Mucinex DM Expectorant & Cough Suppressant helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus and make coughs more productive. Temporarily relieves: cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation as may occur with the common cold or inhaled irritants; the intensity of coughing; the impulse to cough to help you get to sleep.

My pharmacist says "no" July 30, 2010 Janice E. Houser (Knoxville, TN USA) I intended to order mucinex alone but opened the package before seeing my mistake. So I asked my pharmacist if the additional ingredient was OK. He said the two ingredients fight each other, so that the combination makes no sense.
Mucinex DM July 24, 2010 James E. Young This is the exact same OTC product carried by Walmart, Walgreens and most any pharmacy except the price is less than half of reg retail.
So-so June 25, 2010 Cheryl J Wilson I have had a bad cold for almost 3 weeks now. After week 1 I happened to be going in to see my doctor for other reasons but asked about my cold as I have never had a cold for more than a week. She said that if the mucus persisted, to take Mucinex. I started taking Mucinex DM at the start of the third week when the mucus became unbearable and almost suffocating in my throat. Mucinex has defintely made it easier for me to swallow and breathe, as the mucus is definitely not so thick and awful. However, I didn't have a cough previously and now every night I am coughing through most of the night and not getting much rest. My throat gets all sore and scratchy but all the other cold medicine I have has some of the same ingredients as Mucinex, so as much as Nyquil or a cough syrup would make my throat feel better, I can't take it on top of the Mucinex. I don't know if this is a common side effect, but it is what's unfortunately happening to me. I know Mucinex has an expectorant though I'm not sure if that's what is causing the cough, as I am not coughing during the day, just the night. I would think the expectorant would make me cough all the time if it were what's causing the cough. It could be the reclined sleeping position. I've tried propping myself up on pillows but I haven't had any better relief. I'll keep taking Mucinex anyway though; I can't breathe and swallow without it right now. And I think I'll be calling my doctor next week if this cold persists into a 4th week.
No noticeable side-effects June 21, 2010 Personne (Rocky Mountain West) The primary active ingredient in these tablets is Dextromethorphin Hydrobromide. It is typically found in cough syrups and the like. In that formulation, it makes me groggy. In another 4 hours or so, it's time for more. Not fun, and perhaps a bit dangerous. The timed-release in these Mucinex tables lessens those side effects. I don't get groggy, yet the medication does stay in effect for a good half-day. If you find that you need a cough medication for more than a few days, these aren't bad at all (of course, it's always a good idea to talk with your physician). The price is also about half of what I've seen in local stores.
Taken for mucous, not cough May 5, 2010 J. Clemons (Surfdom California) Medication made me drowsy and sort of spacey. Almost sure that those who complained about jitters and not being able to sleep did not take Musinex DM; as someone observed, these people were probably taking Musinex D. I have one comment on extended-release(X) drugs--if you don't respond well to the drug, your stuck with it in your system for a long time. I would be very before wary of taking x-released drugs. In fact I avoid extended release drugs unless prescribed by doctor. Also, as a useful rule of thumb, be careful before taking over the counter, non-RX drugs. Do some research and ask your doctor. For example, many medications are put over the counter in less strength than RX of same drug--e.g. ibuprophen (active ingred. in Advil, MOtrin). RX strengh is 600 milligrams, prescribed by all doctors. Over the counter Ibuprophen is only 200 mg., so you must take 3 pills to get the amount you really should be taking.
