Worked for a while... moving on now August 17, 2010 Ray (Bay Area, Ca) I was quite pleased with this for the first 6 months. Now as my son's diet is changing, the odor of his bowl movements can no longer be contained. We always tightly wrap our diapers and I even tried washing it frequently but after about 3 or 4 days the stench comes right back and now I'm at a point where it's just taking too much time and effort to maintain. There is one serious design flaw though - the pail is tapered such that the bottom is noticeably larger than the top (probably for balancing purposes). The problem is if the diaper bag gets too full it makes it really hard to pull out the diapers.
Pros:
- cheaper than alternatives
- worked great the first 6 months
- was able to use normal garbage bags
Cons:
- smells after 6 months
- bad tapered design makes it hard to remove diapers
Cheaper than Diaper Genie and works great too. June 21, 2010 Leigha (Denver) SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN DIAPER GENIE! We had a Genie for our first child and I got so sick of paying for expensive replacement sacks. A friend had a Diaper Champ and I loved hers. So we bought it when we found out we were having our second child. The only issue I've ever had was that you really have to make sure the poopy diapers are well wrapped up. If there is just a little bit of a mess seeping out, it will mess up the sides of the diaper chamber and you will have to clean it. Its a little tricky to clean properly if this happens. Also, make sure that you dump it regularly when the diapers get larger, because once its full, its hard to operate properly. But hey, if you use cheap trash bags, then you can afford to dump it often. Also, I never noticed a bad smell unless I was changing the trash bag. Only when I opened the Diaper Champ to change the bag did I notice a smell, so it really kept the bad smell contained.
So far, so good June 14, 2010 Vanessa (Maryland USA) I decided on the Baby Trend Diaper Champ Deluxe, Blue after much debate and comparison with the Diaper Genie. I went with Diaper Champ, mainly because of the refill cartridge issue. It's been great so far, and I like being able to use an average, everyday trash bag, rather than having to continually fork out for the refill cartridges. I would recommend, though, that you use a strong bag, because it holds quite a few diapers if you fold them up good. You have to be careful to not throw anything other than diapers in, because some things (like individual baby wipes) will get stuck. I have concerns about the odor issue I've seen in reviews. To date, my son is 9 months old and eating solid food, yet there is still no odor. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way going forward.
It stinks so bad~ June 2, 2010 cg This pail was given to me as a gift. when I had my first child. Well he is 2 now and I have a baby girl who will be turning one next month and I have to say it is the most worse diaper pail in the world. Not only do I have to change the pail every other day. But it likes to hold in the smell. I have done everything from bleaching it. Scrubbing it. Soap. White Vinegar. i even let it sit outside in sun. Cause I live in sunny FL. And that didn't help Instead it ends up bringing in these nasty flies. Now I am shopping around for another one. Cause my son is going to potty training and I can't stand the smell no more. it stinks up my whole bathroom and bedroom. Its disgusting. From all the cleaning and everything. It cause it to crack on the top. I am very dissappointed in the product and will not buy another one of these.
Good container, watch using diaper bags May 29, 2010 Cassidy's mom (Huntington Beach, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I put this on my baby registry after reading all of the favorable reviews. I agree with the pros - nice to be able to use standard trash bags, seems to contain the smell well and is easy to assemble/use. The cons: if you are using something like the Sassy bags for #2 diapers, they get caught up in the turning mechanism. This is quite frustrating, particularly in the middle of the night while holding the baby and trying to do one-hand disposal! Also, it is a bit smaller than I envisioned, so we have to empty it pretty much each day. I have not used any other diaper disposal system, so I do not have a point of comparison, but I would recommend researching other options to see if they address the cons of this one.
